Press Release 29th July 2024

NEWBY AND SCALBY TOWN COUNCIL

Update to the media (Yorkshire Post, BBC and This is the Coast)

Monday 29th July 2024

Following on from the press release dated 17th July 2024, which can be viewed here: https://newbyandscalby-tc.gov.uk/press-release-17th-july-2024/
further background and information is being provided in order to clarify questions that have been posed by the media and members of the public.

The action group “Friends of Newby and Scalby Wellbeing Hub” was only founded on 13th March 2024.  It was set up by Reg Towse, the disgruntled (as said by BBC News on Thursday 18th July 2024) former chairman of Newby and Scalby Town Council.

Reg Towse had previously resigned from this council on 7th December 2023.

Residents need to understand that Newby and Scalby Town Council has never run such a “Wellbeing Hub”.

Indeed it was the 2023 failure to meet the outcomes of the grants from the Woodsmith Foundation, that caused the return of the grants and the subsequent review about the viability of the “Community Hub”.

Even though the grant funding had to be returned, it was confirmed at the meeting of 26th January 2024 that the building would remain open for bookings and the meeting space and facilities were available for hire.  A further meeting on 20th March 2024 stated again that the hub would remain open for external hires but no events would be run by Council staff, and to review this decision in early 2025 .

It is important for the media to understand that this Town Council has only one member of staff, and that is the Clerk (i.e. equivalent to the CEO of a business).
